With modern city’s rapid renewal, renovation and transformation of ancient city area becomes increasingly necessary. How to renovate and transform these areas in a scientific and efficient way that takes both modern people’s various needs and preserving ancient area’s wholeness into consideration consists the focus of this research. In other words, the current research aims to find solutions to transform ancient city area into a modern residency balancing between privacy and neighborhood under the circumstance of its surrounding historical environment.Referring to the four principles of ancient city renovation, which are wholeness, public involvement, sustainability, and inheritance plus recreation, this research brings out the concept of developing strategy to fulfill modern residential needs and to harmonize with traditional feature. Taking No.21 Gaogangli block as an executable example and learning from previous cases, the author pays attention to its specific character (its history and external appearance), and looks for a reasonable renovation plan from the perspective of architecture form, function replacement, and structural management.This article emphatically describes the author’s design idea and process of renovating the ancient area, No.21 Gaogangli block. The main body expands on the details:a stimulated design assignment, a field research report, the overall plan, individual design, and final presentation.
