In China contemporary urban environment, the contradiction between the interests of the public and individuals has resulted in the ignorance of urban public space. Open spaces are often of low quality, as they are too isolated and lack of vitality. Meanwhile, with the large-scale urban construction and renewal, contradiction between historic building protection and urban renewal has become increasingly prominent.Based on the situation above, it is very important to use design methods to increase urban social ties, sense of history and sense of place. Cities should make full use of architecture and landscape design to create positive urban public space. One of the purposes of the study is find out how architectural design strategies can lead to a positive urban public space? In urban neighborhoods, we should not only consider the mutual coordination between old and new in expansion, but also to show their own characteristics, so as to convey the sense of memorial. Thus, the second purpose of the study is to see what kinds of design techniques and principles can promote the harmony between the old and the new, as well as the continuation of historical context in existing environment. In 2015, Atelier Zhao Chen was commissioned the project of New Nanjing Museum Of The Site Of Lijixiang Comfort Stations. The project is located in the urban historic district. The first phase is the restoration of original historical buildings; the second phase will expand Museum on this basis. With the spatial condition formed by the existing building, it is crucial during the expansion to handle the relationship between the old and the new, as well as to provide service and continue the sense of historical monument, in order to provide a positive public space for city. In conclusion, service, public, memorialization is the key words of the second phase expansion, as well as the focus of this paper. The research was based on real project, this research hope to provide a typical design method of historic buildings expansion in China urban context with practical limitations.
