The design of network based intelligent wheelchair controlling system is an integration of the advanced controlling system from computer technology, sensor technology, network communication and artificial intelligence. The intelligent wheelchair detects and avoids obstacles automatically. And a video capturing module and WiFi communication module has been applied so that the wheelchair can capture and compress the live video data by kernel controller and then update the real-time data to the local server and then the data received by the mobile terminal users. So, in the case of the absence of guardians, doctors, they or the patients themselves can get access to the wheelchair controller via android app on smart phone or tablet. The terminal app can not only determine the information of its environment, it can also send appropriate commands to achieve the remote control. Thus, the censoring and remote controlling devices ensure the safety and reliability of the intelligent wheelchair and it will make more convenience.The present design mainly concerns the following tasks:1. The design of overall structure of the intelligent wheelchair. That includes the selection of the model of kernel controller, the motor, the censoring device, the wireless router, the mobile terminal and the driving circuit.2. Network communication. The present design selects android OS as the terminal devices and both server-side and client-side application software is developed separately. By using WiFi technology in the local area network, the client and server are able to connect and transfer data with each other through a wireless router.3. Integrated debugging. First, the debugging of movement control functions at local area, including forward, backward, turn left, turn right, etc. Then movement control functions are tested in wireless network to test the reliability and validity of remote control. Finally the video transmission is expended and tested.The result shows that this system has not only the convenient controls, excellent security and reliability, and a good interface both for wheelchair and terminal devices, but also the extensibility for a better accessibility for elderly and disabled people.
