The stairwell of high-rise buildings and deep underground structures is the main evacuation facility to ensure the human safety when a fire drill happens, and it undertakes the main mission of evacuation. The behavior of people who have a heavy burden is obviously different with the ordinary evacuees. The heavy burden will seriously affect the evacuation speed in the stairwell, increase the evacuation time and risk. The speed of people who have a heavy burden can provide scientific reference for performance-based fire protection design and guarantee people’s safe evacuation in an emergency. Therefore, it is important to study the speed of people who have a heavy burden in a stairwell.Based on the summary of previous stairwell evacuation researches, by developing the individual and cluster evacuation experiments in a stairwell in different weight conditions, the main study conclusions are obtained as follows:(1)The individual ascending and descending experiments in the conditions of loading weight Okg.5kg,10kg have been carried out. the distribution rules of speed and time in different weight conditions have been analyzed, the regularity of speed variation along with the change of floor has been obtained. And the influence of the toad to evacuation speed has been analyzed.(2) By analyzing the influence of weight and body mass index to evacuation speed, it can be draw that weight has no significant impact on the speed in different toading conditions. And in none-loading condition, body mass index has no obvious influence on evacuation speed. In loading condition, body mass index has certain influence on descending evacuation speed but has no obvious influence on ascending speed.(3) By developing the cluster ascending and descending experiments in the condition of loading weight Okg,5kg,10kg,the average speed of ascending and descending have been obtained and they are cluster ascending 0.74m/s,0.60 m/s,0.55 m/s, cluster descending 1.16 m/s,0.87 m/s,0.83 m/s respectively, speed variation isn’t along with the change of floor, and the cluster ascending and descending speed in loading condition are lower than those in none-loading condition.(4)Based on the relationship between speed and pedestrian density, the speed of evacuation along with the change of pedestrian density has been investigated in different loading conditions and there is an obvious linear relationship between speed and density, a model of the relationship between speed and pedestrian density in different loading conditions has been gained. But during the time of ascending evacuation in loading condition, there is no distinct linear relationship between evacuation speed and density.
