Recent years, with the rapid development of the national economy, promoting increase of the demand for electricity and power quality requirements of the industry. Because China has a vast, energy mainly concentrated in the western region, while the load is mainly concentrated in the eastern coastal areas, owing to the uneven distribution of features, making long-distance transmission technology has become an important means to solve the problem. With the development of ultra-high pressure cross-regional long-distance transmission, as well as advances in power electronics technology, power grid demands more and more large reactive power. Meanwhile, the widespread adoption of high-power load will bring voltage fluctuations, flicker, distortion and other issues, which will result in shortening the life of electrical equipment and seriously affect the security and stability of power grid operation. For this reason, to ensure the balance of reactive power grid, to improve power quality and improve reliability, and maintain safe and stable operation of the grid has a very important significance.MCR has a good advantage in reactive power compensation, and it mainly influences the saturation degree of the core by changing the DC excitation, which reaches the purpose of adjusting its equivalent reactance output, in order to achieve a smooth adjustment of its output capacity features. In addition, MCR has a significant effect on increases of transmission lines power, frequency over-voltage limit and suppress of arc current and other aspects. Therefore, it has an important significance for the study of characteristics of the magnetic controllable reactor.In this paper, using lOkV prototype parameters as a data source of simulation model,it will study about its body structure, working principle, electromagnetic properties, mathematical modeling, software simulation, performance improvement and other aspects.Through briefly introducing the magnetic controllable reactor body structure and working principle and analyzing the methods of mathematical modeling on MATLAB platform to build a circuit model of magnetic controllable reactor, it will get simulation analysis of the circuit characteristics by adjusting the trigger angle of the thyristor different to give winding current of different operating conditions,, and the further use of BP neural network, hysteresis loop under DC bias was fitted. On ANSOFT platform magnetic circuit model of magnetic controllable reactor will be established, simulation analysis for its magnetic circuit characteristics, it will give a brief analysis about changes of the flux density distribution.
