The formation and development of metropolitan is an important stage of urbanization process. With the rapid development of China’s Yangtze River Delta Metropolitan, Pearl River Delta Metropolitan and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Metropolitan, passenger travel demands in these regions are growing quickly, which put forward higher requirements for their regional transportation system. The traffic structure of metropolitan can be formed with the scientific guidance view, which will be practical and significant for metropolitan to avoid the blind construction of transportation infrastructure and promote the stable development of passenger traffic system.Firstly, based on the summary of researches, this paper analyzes the transport modes of metropolitan inter-city passenger transportation and identifies the context and passerger flow charateristics of metropolitans. Besides, it also describes the composition and application conditions of metropolitan inter-city passenger transportation modes and studies the existing inter-city traffic pattern configuration form and main influencing factors.Secondly, by the characteristics analysis of metropolitan intercity passenger traffic demand, this paper designs a method for forecasting the demand of metropolitan intercity passenger traffic. The demand characteristics include the amount of passengers, time and space distribution and structural characteristics, etc. The demand forecasting method for metropolitan intercity passenger traffic includes: using principal component analysis to extract passenger demand factors; using the improved gravity model to forecast traffic distribution of metropolitan intercity passenger; using logit model to forecast the share may existing rate of main possible modes in metropolitan.And then, this paper focuses on building the configuration model of the metropolitan intercity passenger traffic patterns. On the basis of describing the multiobjective transportation mode decision problems, it puts forward the modeling ideas of the configuration model. When selecting the configuration targets, from the requirements of the new urbanization, it selects meeting the balance between supply and demand, the comprehensive utility maximization, the resource consumption minimization as the goals. When creating constraints, the future total demand, capital investment and the total travel time and traffic environment are considered. Then, the traffic pattern configuration model is built, and the steps to solve the model based on genetic algorithm are designed.Finally, this paper predicts the trip distribution for the Changchun metropolitan and applies the established configuration model of metropolitan inter-city passenger transport model to configurate typical urban passenger traffic modes. The configuration is analyzed in detail and some configuration recommendations are put forward. The research results in this paper will provide a theory basis and decision-making refernce for the mode configuration of metropolitan inter-city passenger transport and the construction and development of passenger transportation system.
