With the rapid development of market economy in our country, the manufacturing industry tends to be more mature in recent years. In this case, intra-industry and inter-industry competitions has become increasingly fierce. Therefore, it demonstrates to be particularly important to improve production efficiency and to reduce the production cost and the waste of enterprise resource in order to enhancing the enterprise’s core competitive ability. This paper focused on the analysis of the theory “Single Minute Exchange of Die”(SMED) and research of how to utilize lean production and SMED theories to make enterprises more competitive.SMED is a practical technique dealing with multi product and small batch manufacturing. It means that SMED is one of the lean production modes, as an efficient operation improvement. The reduction of conversion time in the production line can enhance the operation ratio of facilities and then improve production efficiency and capacity. And it also can reduce additional stock because of short conversion time, avoiding available fund wasting. Thus, the research of this paper is of great theoretical value and practical significance.The research methods and theory of lean production theory and SMED are first introduced by this paper, which is the basis of implementing SMED. Then taking H company as an example, The basic situation is analyzed, its production line using Surface Mount Technology(SMT) and the line change of machine workshop in H company. The current problems of the line change in the company’s production line and their causes through the analysis of its internal and external operation are summarized. And then aiming to solve these problems, lean production theory and SMED are used, combined with their own resources to improve the production line. In order to improve the efficient of line change in machine workshop, the "andon" system and "water spider" principle are used. The ultimate goal is to realize feeding on production, and then to shorten the line change time, improving production efficiency. Finally, the areas for improvement are pointed out through contrast and analysis of conversion time between pre-changed line and changed line, as well as the assessment of production line with SMED in H company. The scheme of production line with SMED in this paper is not only be fit for H Company, but also for other manufacturing companies.
