At present, energy crisis and environment pollution caused by using traditional energy have attracted the attention of more and more people. To explore and use renewable energy is a significant solution to solve the problems. As ocean current energy has the advantages of rich reserves and high energy density, studies on current power generation technology are both popular home and abroad. Earlier, the laboratory has made quite a lot of efforts on exploring the use of ocean current power generation technology in industrial applications. Based on the achievements of the earlier studies, this paper explores how direct-driven ocean current power generation unit can start and operate normally at low ocean current speed. Taking the characteristics and requirements of electricity utilization of marine instrumentations into considerations, the paper develops a full set of direct-driven ocean current power generation system applicable to low current speed. Studies also have been done on a full set of energy management system, and on the power consumption management and charging method of storage batteries and control instrumentations. The prototype unit has already been manufactured and experimented successfully.Chapter one concludes the research progress of ocean current power generation technologies all around the world, with special focus on the current status of new energy power supply technologies for instrumentations. Based on the background, the research contents and significance of this paper are developed.Chapter two introduces the research method and design technique of a complete ocean current power mechanical system by following the introduction of the overall structure of the ocean current power generation unit. Focus has been put on the introduction of the design method and process of the core components of the mechanical system. The designs of the impellor, driving system, sealing devices and other critical components have already been completed.Chapter three focuses on the study of energy management system applicable to instrument power supply. The hard system is introduced, and the main topology of the switching power supply is designed. Researches have been done on signal collecting, signal processing, data transmission, fault detections, active control and energy management to achieve the effective application of electricity between power consuming instrumentations and lithium battery pack.Chapter four introduces the experimental method and results of the ocean current power generation unit. Systematic experiments on the unit and the control system have both been successfully done in the factory and in the ocean. The experimental data has been collected and analyzed, which shows the unit can operate perfectly and is qualified to promote for practical applications.Chapter five concludes the paper, and at the same time comes up with further research direction and prospects of this project.
