The Study Of Block Characteristics’ Influence On Middle School Students’ Commuting

Students’ school commuting plays an important role in urban transportation. In the recent years, the method of which students go to and from schools by car is becoming increasingly prominent with the rapid urbanization and the improvement of the residents’ living standards. This kind of case increases the urban traffic pressure, and leads to the environmental degradation, as well as makes negative impacts on student’s health. Therefore, to do a research of the block characteristics’ influence on students’ commuting, will positively affect residents making the most appropriate choice on modes of transportation, thus it effectively suppresses unnecessary motorized trip. At the same time, it can optimize the distribution of education facilities and school management and ensure the safety of students while going to and from school. Those issues are vital forour society.This paper is a commentary on travel condition; basic education facilities; school district management according to the current situation with the case of Hangzhou, where degree of congestion and the per-capitavehicle ownership rank the top of China.Also based on the questionnaire survey about student going to and from school way from 1124 students of the 11 different middle schools in five districts, this paper analyzes the correlation between community attribute; travel time and preferences; and block characteristics to trip mode. Also it proposes block comprehensive environmental index and student’s health of going to and from school index concept. In addition, it compares two indexes- the degree of agreement in different cases of block.Using the SPSS to build travel mode choice model for the analysis shows that the density of road intersection; density of bus stops; traffic in satisfaction and the extent of detour road have very important influence on students’ choices of going to and from school.According to the research results, it puts forward the strategy of the middle school students’ health while going to and from school, the contents include:(1)optimize the school location layout, reasonable planning school district;(2)strengthen urban construction and management and improve the slow system;(3)improve public transport service levels and promote the development and popularization of school bus;(4)increase the proportion of students’ going to and from school by themselves and guide residents to use more green transportation.
