With the increasing complexity of the operating environment of power system and the reform of the electric power system, the traditional electric power network needs to be further promoted and realized to the smart grid. Future smart grid will completely replace the existing traditional power grid operating mode.The role of the intelligent substation in the link of each system in the smart grid. In intelligent substation, the digital communication transmission mode which is represented by Ethernet has replaced the traditional hard wired circuit. The main advantage of this mode is that all the transmission signals can be exchanged and shared, but there is a complicated situation in which the transmission process is not visible and the maintenance is complex.At the same time, with the rapid development of economy, society supply reliability requirements are becoming increasingly high, the current status of the primary equipment maintenance has been developed to a higher level, but the beginning of secondary equipment condition-based maintenance is relatively late and slow development. Therefore, the urgent need for innovative research from repair methods, equipment, technology, strategy, pattern, etc., in order to meet the needs of rapid development of smart substation. At this stage, the secondary fault diagnosis and condition assessment work plan the introduction and trials are becoming more and more urgent. Present from the intelligent substation has been put into operation to statistics, most of the faults and defects during layer appears, but there is no corresponding level of technology quickly troubleshoot and positioning.This paper aims to substation main difference from traditional substation intelligent, key technology research progress of intelligent substation, Intelligent substation secondary equipment fault diagnosis system, case studies and practical projects applied five-pronged approach of this paper introduces the intelligent substation development and the common process layer fault intelligent substation rapid diagnostic techniques, proposed fast fault location methods to improve troubleshooting efficiency and quality and eliminate defects, shorten downtime.And through typical case introduced the technology in the overhaul of the key technologies have proven its process-level online fault diagnosis and positioning fast and convenient offline advanced diagnostic systems, equipment condition assessment is accurate, overhaul of Decision Sciences and other characteristics. Maximize the utilization of electrical equipment, reduce equipment outage time, reduce false touch, mis-wiring, the probability of false-tuning of the accident, greatly improving the reliability of substation protection system to ensure reliable operation of the grid, reducing maintenance human, financial and material resources of the waste, a significant social and economic benefits. Meanwhile, for the construction of a strong smart grid to provide reliable technical support to lay a solid foundation.
