Tabia is a mixture of lime, clay and sand, and it’s a common kind of lime base construction material. Unlike the ancient Europeans, who added natural or artificial pozzolanic additions into lime mortar to improve its performance and prolong its longevity, the ancient Chinese craftsmen created another way to achieve the same purpose, through the addition of organic additives(such as sticky rice, egg white, brown sugar, Tung-oil and blood). As tabia is more complex than lime mortar, detecting the organic additives in tabia met great interference. This study started with sticky rice tabia which is the most common ones and was interfered most. We found a simple and economical method to detect sticky rice composition in tabia. Starch, the main component of sticky rice, can be extracted by acetic acid aqueous solution, using a microporous membrane filter and an ultrafiltration method to get rid of the interference of soil particles and pigment, and finally it can be detected by an iodine-starch chromogenic reaction. A number of ancient Chinese tabia samples were analysed using this method and starch was found, which proved that sticky rice was added during the preparation process of tabia. According to the result of the sticky rice component test, several typical tabia samples was selected. These samples were analyzed by XRD、SEM、TG-DSC for further study. This study use thermal analysis method to detect whether there was any h-ydraulicity component produced. And found ancient tabia has more hydraulicit-y component.Finding a method to detect the components in tabia or lime mortar containing soil has a great significance in recovering traditional technology and in the study of the development of Chinese science and technology, as well as in the restoration and protection of historical architecture.
