Under the environment of current world’s economic booms, the energy needing is expanding. According to the datum from "Oil and gas" magazine, the volume of oil resources from ocean takes about 34% of global oil resources, and the volume of gas resources from ocean takes about 30% of global gas resources, while the detection rate of both is only 28%. Oil and gas from land is drying up, so the ocean resources are focused on and the research on ocean engineering equipments is becoming urgent. But we take a late start comparison with developed countries that have accumulated tons of experiences and datum. It is necessary to do some work on this subject.Mud system is one of the most important systems of a drilling rig. Mud is also called drilling fluid, the function of which is to take the drilling debris out of well, to cool down and lubricate the drill bit, to balance the pressure under well, the cost of which is about 10% of all drilling cost. So, it plays a important role to design rationally and to choose compatible equipments, and is of great importance for the functionality and efficiency of the rig. What’s more, the design work related to mud system is a cross point of both marine engineering and drilling engineering.In the process of mud system design, procedures are as follows:classify and state the function of mud system; determine overall plan of jack up rig:start from working condition, working area, function requirement of the rig, refer to related rules and regulations, put security into consideration; calculate the thickness, stress, friction loss of the piping system and analysis the pump capacity with the help of computer software.In addition to support the results, record and summarize the process of installation and commissioning of the mud system. We can draw a conclusion that the design was successful and could fulfill owner’s requirements.The thesis put theory into practice and resulted in required conclusion, and showed kind of quotable meaning during the later designing and installation and commissioning process during building a drilling platform.
