Research On Modern Jiageng Buildings Design

Jiageng Buildings, is referred to the school buildings which was invested and presided over the construction by patriotic overseas Chinese Tan Kah Kee in Jimei and Xiamen University from the early twentieth century to the 60 s. They have extraordinary significance in the history of modern Chinese architecture for their combination of Chinese and Western, and with full-bodied region characteristic of south of Fujian.Jiageng Buildings construction had experienced two times, before 1949 and after 1949. In different times, the approach of Jiageng Buildings design had been developing. And so did Jiageng Buildings. The research will be through the methods of on-the-spot investigation, letters and literature analysis, image translation, comparative analysis. This paper attempts to carding the process of Jiageng Buildings in different times, in the perspective of the main designer, design approaches and design drawings, and discussing the cooperation between design and construction. Then focusing on the buildings, in the aspects of distribution, plan type and elevation characteristic, analyzes and researches the evolution trajectory of Jiageng Buildings design feature in different times, summarizes the design method of Jiageng Buildings. Finally put them into the background in modern society to explore the cause of Jiageng Buildings development, which is the architectural thoughts of Tan Kah Kee.This article has four parts. The first part is introduction about the research background, object, significance, status, methods and the technical route.The second part introduces the development of Jimei and Xiamen University in different times, including the school situation, campus planning and construction situation.The third part with two chapters, respectively researches, in different times, before and after 1949, on design approach, design characteristics and the relationship between design and construction of Jiageng Buildings.The fourth part summarizes the architectural thought of Tan Kah Kee and the design characteristics. And the relationship between design and construction is discussed.
