China is the world’s largest consumer of aluminum and consumes annually about 14000000 tons of aluminum, accounting for about 39.4% of global consumption. The alumina production process will produce a large amount of mineral residue, commonly known as red mud. At present, the method of processing red mud in inland areas mainly take dam storage. A large number of engineering practice and research shows that the creep characteristics of stockpiling materials will have a significant impact on security and stability of the tailings. Therefore, In-depth study on creep properties of red mud plays an important role in safety and stability study. This paper takes Guizhou plant tailings storage project, systematically studies the creep characteristics of red mud from Bayer process and its influence on tailings by using the method of laboratory test, theoretical analysis, numerical simulation. The specific contents are as follows:①According to the basic soil test and microstructure test of red mud from Bayer process,we get the basic physical and mechanical properties and the main mineral composition of red mud from Bayer process. By strain controlled triaxial apparatus tests, we obtain the Bayer red mud cohesion C and internal friction angle f.②Through three axis creep test of red mud from Bayer process, by the graded loading way, we research and analyse creep deformation of the red mud from Bayer process under different confining pressure and different stress level, then we get the relationship of red mud from Bayer process among the stress, strain, time.③For establishment the relationship between the stress strain and time of red mud from Bayer process, Based on the empirical model of Singh-Mitchell model, we compare the fitting results obtained from the model with the results of creep test of red mud from Bayer process, we obtain the empirical model for the red mud from Bayer process. Based on the component model of Burgers model and H-K model, we compare the fitting results obtained from the model with the results of creep test of red mud in Bayer process, we have that the Burgers model is more able to describe the creep characteristics of red mud from Bayer process. By comparing the Singh-Mitchell creep model and the Burgers creep model, we see that the fitting degree of the test data of Burgers creep model is higher, better than the Singh-Mitchell creep model.④Applying of Mohr-Coulomb constitutive model and Cvisc model respectly in the finite element software FLAC3 D to Simulation calculation,we detaily analyse of Guizhou plant tailings storage stability. By analysinghe the two conditions of the tailings stress and displacement. We konw, for the red mud from Bayer process tailings, considering the creep properties of the red mud from Bayer process is necessary, it is very important to ensure the safety of tailings dam stability.
