With the rapid development of new country construction, the number of rural houses has been keeping increasing. After solving the problem of living, pursuiting comfort is becoming the next step. However, based on the traditional way of construction, the physical properties of enclosing structures are usually not good, which leads to a bad situation of indoor thermal comfort. Under such circumastance, it will make energy comsuming increase rapidly by only using active strategies. For a long time, the research has been focused on urban houses, which paid very little attention to rural houses. So it is of great importance to improve indoor environment of rural houses by paasive ways based on economic situations in rural areas.To solve the problem of “menlou ” from field research in Yongchuan, this dissertation attempts to come up with some improved strategies to pitched roofs from the perspective of architecture, which is intended to improve ventilation of the whole house. In order that it will reduce indoor temperature on hot days.This dissertation has four main chapters. First, based on field research in Yongchuan, the construction technology and usage of roofs are clearly analysed. After qualitative analyzing the process of heat transfer through different types of roofs, it comes to the conclusion that the ways of roofs do have influence on indoor thermal comfort. Second, based on the local weather and the theory of natural ventilation, a compuer simulation quantitative analysis is used to make a comparison to testify the qualitative conclusion. In the fourth chapter, six improved strategies to pitched roofs are proposed with their using principals under the result of analyzing the largest opening in every enclosing structure of pitched roof. At last, six strategies are used proactively to work out architectural plans of rural house, providing the suitable roof type for the eight house types, so as to offer guidance for self-constructed rural houses in Yongchuan.This research tries to use architectural stratagies to improve indoor environment with passive low-cost ways. It is meaningful for saving energy with less mechanical equipment used, hopeing to provide references for further researches on rural house roofs.
