As a new network mode, aeronautical ad hoc network is an important part in the development of future military and civilian aviation communication. For providing data with transmission path and path selection, mobile routing technology largely determines the performance of the aeronautical ad hoc networks. Since aeronautical ad hoc network has the characteristics of high dynamic topology, low node density, the time-varying channel, large network scale and so on, it makes the traditional mobile ad hoc network routing protocol not applicable to air environment. So designing high quality and high efficiency aeronautical ad hoc network routing protocol has great significance. With the rapid development of positioning technology, the node can easily get the geographic location information, the routing protocol based on the geographic location information is simple, efficient and robust, and it has broad application prospect in aeronautical ad hoc network. According to the characteristics and needs of the aeronautical ad hoc network, the main research works are as follows:(1) Aeronautical ad hoc network and its routing technology are researched. Focused on two classical routing protocols GPSR and AODV, analyzed their implementation principle, the advantages and disadvantages and applicable scenario.(2) Improved the greedy forwarding strategy. Aimed at the characteristic of high dynamic, measurement of greedy forwarding was improved. We took the relative speed between the nodes into consideration to select more effective and reliable next hop.(3) Proposed the IRG(Improved Reactive and Geographical Routing Protocol) based on the geographic routing and reactive routing. Aimed at the characteristic of low and nonuniform node density, when confronted with routing void and the greedy forwarding strategy failure, using reactive routing mechanism replace traditional perimeter forward strategy to solve the problem.(4) Based on three indicators including the packet delivery ratio, average end-to-end delay and routing overhead to analysis the performance of various protocols. Simulation experiments are implemented on the NS-2 platform. Results show that the improved protocol can effectively improve the packet delivery ratio. It can well adapt to the high dynamic topology and low node density aeronautical ad hoc network.
