Traditional construction is a typical extensive industry with low level of technology and high energy consumption, which is in urgent need of renovation and upgrading by using emerging information technologies. With the rapid development of BIM and its application in the AEC(Architecture Engineering Construction) industry continues to be excavated during the past several years, the value and potential is obvious. The application of technologies based on BIM, such as four-dimension progress control, five-dimension progress and cost control, has broadened the share and exchange of virtual data of BIM, but the great challenges of application of BIM on construction site still exist. Construction is a highly dynamic process, the complex environment of construction site, making construction project management becomes extremely complex. According to the literature review, in respect of real-time share and exchange of virtual data, the practical construction phase has not fully benefited from BIM technology. BIM model not only need to build and simulation analysis before construction, but also need to use continuously during the construction process. Therefore, in order to maximize the application value of BIM technology on construction site, this paper puts forward the application modules on construction site based on BIM and AR by introducing an emerging technology called augmented reality(AR). AR technology which allows a user to work in a real world environment with virtual scene superimposed upon or composited with the real world can make full use of the advantages of both by integrating BIM technology. The application modules proposed in this paper include four main modules, pre-construction planning module, pre-construction education module, on-site guidance module and post-construction inspection module. At the beginning, this paper intensively study the models and the information required for applications of modules and applications on construction site based on BIM and AR. Then the interface and general framework of the application module integrated system are designed, and implementation process is described in detail. The feasibility and effectiveness are evidenced by methods of testing functions, comparative experiment and questionnaire. Finally, on the basis of summary of the study, existing shortage and further research which can provide a reference for future research directions have been analyzed.
