With the rapid development of China’s economy and transportation industry, the construction mileage of road is even more rapid growth. Because of excellent performance of asphalt pavement, there is nothing comparable to other materials, and the asphalt pavement has been widely used in the world. It has become the main form of our country highway pavement. However, due to the traffic situation in China(bad traffic, overload phenomenon, etc) and a lack of asphalt, the early damage phenomenon of asphalt pavement is serious, and especially the crack phenomenon in low temperature region is more common. Therefore, the evaluation of low-temperature performance of asphalt mixtures has the profound significance.In this paper, through the understanding of domestic and international research status and relevant specification, analyzing the commonly low temperature performance indicators of asphalt mixture, comprehensively consideration the existing experimental conditions, and determining the penetration test and split test is the main method. The main content of the research on the low temperature performance index of asphalt mixture can be listed as follows:(1) Asphalt low temperature penetration test.Introduce the basic knowledge of penetration test, with 6 kinds of common asphalt and 7 kinds of modified asphalt, and test relying on《Standard Test Methods of Bitumen and Bituminous Mixtures for Highway Engineering》.(2) Asphalt low temperature induction test.Introduced the asphalt temperature induction Index(penetration index PI and penetration viscosity index PVN), and use the same model asphalt with the second chapter, and test relying on《Standard Test Methods of Bitumen and Bituminous Mixtures for Highway Engineering》.(3) Split test.Sketching the low temperature performance evaluation index of asphalt mixture, and analyzing the several commonly used test method of low temperature performance of asphalt mixture. Sketching the theoretical basis of splitting test, analyzing the effect factors of splitting test, and carrying out the splitting test.The results of low temperature asphalt penetration test shows that: penetration-penetration time B can not accurately express the sense of pitch. The analysis of in low temperature asphalt induction test: penetration index PI is not suitable to evaluate the low temperature performance of asphalt material and the PVN25-135 can be used to characterize the asphalt low temperature performance. The splitting test results shows that the PVN25-135 as the low temperature properties index of asphalt mixture is reasonable.
