Study Of Physical Environment On Walkable Neighborhood Among Older Adults

With rapid urbanization, the urban development model that focus on cars pose a serious threat to urban walking space, and the lack of walk and bicycle facilities in urban construction, leads to further deterioration of urban walking environment.In addition, the deepening degree of aging and even more serious chronic disease’s threat to old adults, the contradictions between the needs of the old adults for walking environment and urban physical environment become increasingly sharpening. In the context of aging and motorized urban development patterns, discussion of the needs of physical environment for old adults to walk is very necessary.Creating a walkable neighborhoods for old adults to walk has become the importance of today’s urban and rural planning, there is important social significance to research on it.Firstly, this article chooses the need of walking environment as a research point, and then interpretes space connotation in two levels of the perception of micro-environment and urban layout. It constructs of the system from four aspects: walk destination accessibility, experience of comfort walking, securityof walking space, the visual richness of street.Secondly, it selects 12 neighborhoods in Jiangbei district area as the research object, then gets the data of old adults’ walking behavior and social properties through questionnaire, and obtains data of blocks physical space evaluation factors based on GIS and field surveys. Software of SPSS is used to analysis the correlation of the factors and different types of walking of old adults.Then use multinomial logistic regression model,controlling the impact of socio-economic characteristics of individual variables, to research and analysis of environmental factors on the old adults’ different types of walking.It extracts the key indicators of urban layout and the perceive of micro-environment,in order to explore the characteristics of neighborhood physical environment which are suitable for old adults to walk.Finally, through the empirical research on Jiangbei and the experience of other relevant studies, this text puts forward strategies about improving destinations accessibility, improving comfort of walking, improving securityof walking space, improving the visual richness of street, as to provide a reference to creat a walkable neighborhood physical environment for old adults.
