With the development of the intelligent transportation systems, VANET(Vehicular Ad-hoc Network) has been the concern of many efficient and corporate, especially the study of inter-vehicle communication technology. The high dynamic characteristic of the car’s mobility and network density in VANET, it causes a series of problems such as the frequent change of network topology, the poor connectivity between nodes, the short time of routing survival time and so on. These issues make the research of routing in VANET become a major challenge.In order to solve these problems, this paper study the routing protocol in VANET based on the characteristics of VANET. First, this paper introduced the current research background and situation for VANET. Second, VANET were introduced in detail. Then this paper has a further research of clustering routing protocol after analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the various types of routing protocol. The research contents of this paper as follows:1. AODV(Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector) is improved base on the shortcoming of AODV and the characteristics of VANET. By introducing the clustering idea in the original AODV, the large-scale network segmentation is realized, it effective enhance the management of the network nodes. By finishing clusterint base on the node motion state and keeping some original AODV nodes, it improve the stability of the cluster structure and the connectivity between clusters. The simulation shows that the improved AODV control the network overhead and end to end delay by clustering policy, and enhance the packet delivery ratio.2. According to the characteristics of node in VANET and the disadvantages of routing policy in the Crossroads of urban environments. This paper proposes a new stable clustering routing strategy. It effectively reduce the reassociation of cluster after the cluster head suddenly changed by introducing the auxiliary cluster head. It avoid the phenomenon of loop by the second selection strategy in crossroads. By analyzing the simulation results, it shows that the new routing algorithm has a better routing performance.3. In view of the existing routing policy in VANET that mostly based on single track or unicast multipath. This paper study the multicast multipath routing. It effectively reduce the network control overhead in multipath route by combination of the multipath and clustering. It also improve the packet delivery rate and reduce the delay problem that caused when single path routing failure. Through NS2 simulation experiment, it proves the validity of the new routing protocol.
