A multivariable controller is designed in this paper based on LQG/LTR for a highly nonlinear fighter which has redundant control surfaces and thrust-vectoring engines. Firstly, the modifications and improvements are made based on an existing flight, F-16. And a complex and high-fidelity mathematic model is established. After this, a Simulink simulation model which is high-fidelity, multifunctional and extendable is built up. This simulation model can make great contribution to the development of control system and the verification of control algorithm. Secondly, a general and primary introduction to principles and design procedures of the LQR and LQG/LTR is given. A brief comment of the advantages and shorts is made. Thirdly, a detailed introduction to the classical handling qualities and requirements of aircraft is proposed. The corresponding test methods and test procedures are designed, which can be used to measure and very the performance properties of the controllers and systems. At the closing part of this paper, a longitudinal angle of attack tracking controller is developed based on LQG/LTR with the Simulink tool. This design of controller is based on the former researches and base knowledge. This controller satisfies the requirements of stability and maneuver capability. A conclusion, the design method can be used to design the controllers of the high nonlinear fighters, is derivated from a brief discussion. Meanwhile, there are some disadvantages such as the arrangement and the regulation of some corresponding matrices and parameters. So there is still a lot of space to improve and optimize it. Numerous work can be done for this goal.
