With the application and development of ocean engineering and technology, dynamic positioning(DP) system has been widely used in various applications of ocean engineering because of the application of DP system cannot be constrained by water depth. The vessels such as dredge and pipe-lying ships require DP system achieved more precise positioning even dynamic tracking. What’s more, using DP system to assist the float-over installation become a new method to install the platform. The time-domain simulation method have been studied and the simulate tracking and the horizontal offset as well as the yaw of the ship are analyzed. And the effect of different original positions on dynamic tracking is discussed. It is show that dynamic tracking with an initial horizontal offset can be achieved. The second part is concerned with simulation of float-over installation executed by a dynamically positioning barge, where the calculation of collision force between hull and fender was coupled by the motion of the barge. Finally, a series of comprehensive model tests are carried out to investigate the dynamic response of the float-over system used in Huizhou 25-8 platform installation. The models for the barge, jacket, topside, and the connecting mechanism are established, and various environment conditions are considered in the model tests. The model test is decomposed into standby operations, docking operations and undocking operations and studied respectively, to get the dynamic characteristics and laws of installation system.
