Great attention has been paid on fuel economy and exhaust emissions in today’s automotive industry. This study focuses on the fuel emissions from automotive fuel tank.An actual fuel tank optimization is given in this paper. The fuel tank was jointly developed with joint OEMs to meet emission requirements while taking into account the cost. The main task is applied a systematically analyze approach in order to indentified the root case with relevant elements, through the experimental design, analysis of the key factors, and the performance. Another difficulty is to cross-check with OEMs emission test requirements and to analyze their characteristics. So that a common test method could be widely used for all the OEMs.In theory, starting from a detailed analysis is made on the characteristics of different material for automotive fuel tank firstly, then introduces the principle of fuel permeation, including plastic fuel tank, which has been applied more and more widely for automobiles for reduction of the infiltration emissions. Therefore, the orthogonal test design concept was introduced in this study to analyze the tank as a system and obtain the design. The analysis and the optimization results based on this experimental method with high generalization were applied to verify the theoretical calculation accuracy and rationality of the design of the fuel tank. It was found that this method can improve the development efficiency, reduce development costs, and meet the needs of customers.
