As an important strategic resource in twenty-first Century, Water resource played a key role for the human life and production. The paper calculated the water footprint of Fujian province from 2003 to 2012 based on the concept of virtual water and water footprint of cities in Fujian Province in 2012. From the perspective of virtual water and water footprint, the paper more comprehensive revealed the water resource condition of Fujian Province.First of all, to review the progress of virtual water and water footprint research of domestic and foreign; the research of Fujian province was summarized, further research direction was found. Secondly the paper introduced the water footprint theory and method、the concept of virtual water and water footprint and distinguished the virtual water and water footprint. Once again, the general situation of Fujian province was analyzed, including the general situation of Fujian province natural geographical features, social and economic development, mainly introduced the situation of water resources in Fujian province and the present situation of water resources utilization. Fourth, the paper analyzed the results of Fujian province. The water footprint of Fujian Province in recent years showed a rising trend, in 2012 the water footprint was 37428000000 m3, the largest agricultural water footprint, the second industrial water footprint, and other water footprint minimum, water footprint per capita was 998.61m3. In 2012 the water footprint intensity of 189.97 m3/million yuan, and constantly improved the utilization efficiency of water resource. Urban and rural virtual water diversity index was 1.94 and 1.54 in 2012, the difference gradually reduced. The study found that, Xiamen was not suitable for the development of agriculture, through virtual water flow to meet the demand for agricultural products. Fifth, the paper evaluated the water footprint relevant indicators of the Fujian Province. Water resources in Fujian province the level of self-sufficiency rate remained above 80%, the water resource dependenced on imports averaged around 10%, the overall water resource waste rate was low, but the individual river pollution. The water footprint was bigger than the import export trade, export of water resource. The shortage of water resources was a large variability in individual years, up to 42.25%.Finally, the paper provided suggestions about sustainable development of water resources in Fujian province based on the reduction of water footprint. It included the transformation of the mode of production and life; using eco-technology and the optimization of industrial structure; optimized the industrial structure; increasing the intensity of forest ecological compensation; maked full use of comparative advantages; strengthened forest green water conservation capacity.
