With the development of modern science, especially the radio and the radar technology, which greatly improves the ability of searching, tracking and attacking in the war, the weapon system’s survival has been more severe test. The stealth technology is the most important means of improving the weapon system on survive, penetration and strike capability, and it’s becoming the most effective covert penetration technology. The specular scattering of the stealth technology has been suppressed by the exterior design techniques, and the non-specular scattering caused by surface traveling waves can’t be ignored for the contribution of the radar cross section. The stealth material is the key to suppress the effect of surface traveling waves, but because of the sensitivity of the areas involved, it’s hard to find the researches or reports about the test of stealth material on surface traveling waves suppressing.This paper aims to establish a testing system of stealth material on surface traveling waves suppressing, to accurately test the suppressing performance of the absorbing material under different frequencies, to assess the performance of the stealth materials, and to provide the data for the production of stealth materials. Firstly, this paper researches and analyses the performance of the surface traveling wave, and discusses the wave field distribution, wave impedance, propagation attenuation and inter loss, the phase velocity and energy velocity issues in detail. It’s put an important value on analyzes the excitation issue of surface traveling wave and the excitation efficiency of surface wave when the finite aperture plane wave incidents on the metal plate surface traveling wave. An ultra-wideband horn antenna is simulated and designed as the excitation source of surface wave to simulate the excitation that the finite aperture plane wave incidents on a metal plate.Then, based on the theory analysis and conditional test method, it proposed the test method of surface traveling wave of materials based new structure. Taking the advantage of UWB double-ridge horn antenna, metal-slab, microwave probe, and others test equipment, it builds the test system of materials’ surface traveling wave suppression.Finally, based on the system this paper built, we take the measurement of surface traveling wave suppression with five different RAM with 2 different sizes, then get the suppressing result by calculation, and take an error analysis for the result.
