In recent years, as the development of signal acquisition technology, high-precision timing technology, intelligent mathematical analysis and a series of science and technology, greatly facilitated the study of the traveling wave power grid protection technology, as to achieve fault traveling wave transmission line distance protection is an important technology to ensure safe and stable operation of the power grid. Paper comprehensive analysis and summary the existing techniques and methods of traveling wave protection at home and abroad, on this basis, proposed a new traveling wave protection method based on the wide area of the traveling wave information, it also proposes a method for optimal allocation of network fault traveling wave detection device.Thesis analyzes the research status of the traveling wave protection, elaborated on the main issues of principle as well as the protection of the traveling wave traveling wave protection technology, and carefully summarized and summary of the advantages and disadvantages of various traveling wave protection, then discuss and analyze the fault traveling wave signal propagation in the Power Grid, and detection and extraction of the fault traveling wave signal, that when failure occurs in the power grid of a transmission lines, the line will produce a high-frequency transient traveling wave signal, this signal can truly reflect the characteristics of fault signals, so we can carry out fault traveling wave protection by detecting transient traveling wave signal which contains the information.
