Space-syntax-based Analysis On Spatial Characteristic Of Ancient Villages Street And Alleys Of East And West Mountain In Suzhou

With a long history and unique local characteristics, ancient villages in East and West Mountain are the typical representative of water town culture. In a new background and in a new era, there are many problems in protection and development of traditional ancient villages, causing damage to material space and the loss of non-material cultural heritage of ancient villages. The main reasons are as follows: the theory and method of the research stress subjective and perceptual cognition and lack a more scientific and rational viewpoint; it is one-sided to regard the overall protection of ancient villages as the “dot” protection of a single building, ignoring the spatial features of the ancient village at the overall level. As the frame and context of the ancient village overall space, spaces of streets and alleys are the material carrier of the typical ancient villages. The use of space syntax theory and quantitative analysis method can rediscover ancient villages in east and west mountains and understand the connotation and significance of the ancient village space and the society from the viewpoint of space structure to truly extend space features and inherit regional culture.With axial analysis and visual line analysis of space syntax, this paper, from four levels of whole area, core area, main area and fringe area, analyzes universal law and individual characteristics of streets and alleys space in the ancient villages of east and west mountains in Suzhou, including analysis of space fabric organization, spatial features, axis organization, spatial structure, tier mechanism, spatial layout, entrance unit and openness, and expounds in detail and explains the formation reasons and historical and cultural characteristics, combined with the basic data of ancient village in east and west mountains.With Yang Wan as a typical representative of the ancient villages in east and west mountains, it analyzes space features and utilization mode of Yang Wan ancient village at three levels of regional space, streets and alleys space, micro space and from the perspective of “space –society”. And it analyzes forming mechanism, spatial structure, the spatial function, behavior of crowds and pattern characteristics of Yang Wan ancient village and also summarizes the features of space twist and release, multicenter balance, accordance of multi-aspects of the ancient village streets and alleys.
