Martha Schwartz is an outstanding landscape architect who represents the cutting edge of the landscape and garden design. Her landscape works, as the concrete representation of her thought, value orientation and artistic style, contain abundant humanistic connotations and have reference value in terms of design concept, art form and meaning expression.Understand design and meaning expression methods of Martha’s landscape works clear, and interprets their implicit information about culture, art, society, history and so on. In addition, it brings in advanced design concept for designers occupied in landscape art creation, offering theoretical foundation for the design method and meaning expression aspects of landscape work creation in the future.The objective of this research is to discuss Martha’s gardening projects and the approaches she has incorporated her symbolist idea in those projects. By analyzing the structure, organization, expression, and interaction in her symbolist landscape theory, the study reaches following conclusions:Martha Schwartz has well-developed definitions for symbol in her gardening projects. On the basis of geometric symbol, the paper has summarized the representative symbol including the concentric circles, mound, grid, daily-life products, the deficiency of natural plants, the three primary colors, geometric-shaped artificial plants the geometric shape of the artificial plant and so on.Combined symbol has repeating symmetrical form, simple shapes, showing strong regularity. To the aspect of organization, she uses reserve, repeat, cite, conceptualize, joint, and replace as her major ways to approach her goal. as her design materialsIn Martha’s symbolist landscape, she purse to tell indicative and meaningful story behind the symbol. She employs simile and metaphor as to translate idiom situations of metaphor, and expresses the symbols from the shallower to the deeper with aesthetic thinking. Her achievements in symbolist landscape show her respect of historical culture, enthusiastic of life and sense of fashion.The symbol in the works of Martha Schwartz are closely linked designers with users. The symbols play a role of expressing the theme, inheriting culture and continuing styles of designers. As for the same symbol, there will be some difference between the original connotation of designers and the understand of users, and different users have different evaluation of the same symbol. This is the outcome generating from the combine effects of the differences of users’ age, cultural background,demand and esthetic orientation.
