Postmodern Face In Martha Schwartz’s Works

With the acceleration of reform and opening process, contemporary China is in a stage of rapid economic development. People’s living standard, the cultural level improves significantly. Compared to economic, landscape design industry started late, just experienced a process from scratch, the landscape industry development is not perfect; today with the social assimilation tendency increasingly evident, information exchange more convenient, the world outstanding landscape works become shared resources, which leads domestic landscape industry to emerge "use doctrine"——complete copy, excerpt of foreign works, resulting to a large number of works those are out of the same pattern, rigid, and lack of innovation composition.This phenomenon is obviously negative to the development of landscape design. So we need more attention and find out the roots of these design ideas, improve the design level from the nature. But at present, domestic research of advanced thought and theory is still at the starting stage, the study combined the advanced idea and landscape design is seldom involved in. Thus this thesis based on the research of the postmodern thought of world famous landscape master-Martha Schwartz, provides the theory data for the study of the post modernism, and also for the landscape architect to introduce advanced design ideas and concepts, hoping that designers can incorporate their own thoughts with fully understanding, take its essence, enhance the level of Chinese landscape design.Firstly, through literature consulting, comparison, the formation of Martha Schwartz’s idea of postmodernism is discussed deeply. This thesis analyses the influence of factors containing the family environment, social background, study experience and Peter Walker from four aspects. The meaning of construction:the appearance of postmodernism provides the theoretical basis for Martha Schwartz; family environment and school experience made her having more sensitive artistic perception, which enabled her research into the post modernism at the first time; ex-husband Peter Walker Martha is the catalyst for her growth, the subtle relationship between them, mutual learning, mutual competition has prompted Martha to continue moving forward. This analysis demonstrates the Martha Schwartz’s idea of postmodernism, laid the foundation for the combination of the following analysis, also has significance in the domestic art education mode and his artistic training. Through on-the-spot investigation, comparison and analysis of Martha’s words, combing three features(historical context, metaphor, decoration) of the post modernism landscape, this thesis researches the concrete manifestation of the post modernism in Martha’s works, concludes the metaphor in historical fragment, reproduction of base environment, construction of unstable space and the design method of strong visual impact, as well as combines with Martha’s case in detail.Overall, Martha’s design is based on the understanding and respect of the site culture, shows historical culture and relative thoughts through an artistic, humorous design language. In style, Martha’s design is very aggressive, strong visual impact and non-rational space is the demonstration of contradiction and complexity in post modernism. Finally, popular culture mixed into Martha’s work, made the interaction between landscape and human more frequent, leaded the spirit of landscape design into a new height, opened a new chapter of the post modernism landscape design. This thesis on the research of the post modernism in Martha’s work, not only provides a theoretical basis for later research, but also offers advanced design concept for domestic designers, hoping that they can learn the design method through Martha’s case, injected with their own thought, finally combined with the China conditions and site information, form a set of suitable for China condition, their own perfect design concept.
