The Study Of Classical Chinese Garden Art From The Poems In The Story Of The Stone

The story of the Stone is a treasure of traditional Chinese novel as it describes specifically for poetry, garden, opera and other traditional Chinese art. This paper extracts poems about gardens in The Story of the Stone and analysis them as the aspect of classical landscape art. The aim of this paper is to identify the development of Chinese classical landscape art during Ming and Qing Dynasties and understand relationships between poems and Chinese traditional art, thereby achieving unique understanding of transferring Chinese classical landscape art.First of all, this paper defines and summarizes the elements of poetry, including 9 inscriptions, 22 horizontal inscribed boards, 7 couplets, 15 metrical poems, 1 rhythmical parallel prose and 2 joint sentences. Through poem analysis and landscape evaluation, the link between the poems of The Story of the Stone and the garden art will be explored. Secondly, the article analyzes poetry through three levels. The first level is collating poems about garden art in The Story of the Stone to understand the environment which the poems have been created in. After analyzing the relationship between the environment and poetry, the inscription, horizontal inscribed boards and couplets, five kinds of mode has been obtained. The second level is through analyzing the content of poetry, combining with the environment characteristics, to demonstrate the China classical garden arts from the gardening elements, gardening ideas, gardening methods and artistic conception. On the third level analysis the relationship between poetry and classical garden from a macro point of view, thinking about that poetry is the important landscape element in classical Chinese garden that could be effect on grouping landscape, pointing landscape and opening landscape. Poetry not only points out the landscape, and strengthens the landscape but also extends the artistic conception and resonates with the tourists.With the development of classical gardens in the feudal ages, poetry and landscape has completed work with each other. This phenomenon has created the unique history of landscape architecture. Therefore, poetry in classical gardens is not only samples and the spirit of classical gardens, but more importantly are the key elements in classical Chinese garden. Under the impact of the modern garden, the soul of classical Chinese garden cannot be lost for inheriting the classical Chinese garden art.
