A stable and reliable electric power supply system is an inevitable pre-requisite for the technological and economic growth of any nation. As electricity is entwined with every aspect of day-to-day life, the issue of reliability is paramount. In addition to the inconvenience experienced by consumers during prolonged periods without electricity service, a power outage can literally mean the difference between life and death. From specialized care equipment such as dialysis machines to everyday heating and cooling devices like air conditioners or furnaces, the impact of a power interruption on consumers can be significant. Interruptions can result in fatalities, injuries, days of lost productivity and thousands of dollars in production losses and equipment repairs. Due to this, utilities must strive and ensure that the customer’s reliability requirements are met. It is known fact around the world that 90% of the of the customer service interruptions are caused due to failure in distribution system. Therefore,research on the reliability of distribution system is very necessary.In this paper, taking the power supply reliability of distribution networks in Xinyu city as the research object, we firstly analyse the domestic and foreign research present situation of power supply reliability of distribution network.And then some basic theories which are needed in the current distribution network reliability research are analyzed and introduced. The research focuses on the current situation of Xinyu urban distribution network, carries on the analysis from three aspects which consist of the general situation, the present situation of power system, distribution network power supply reliability statistics, and finally points out the existing problems in the Xinyu urban distribution network.Secondly, using the knowledge of graph theory, combined with the failure mode and effect analysis, block method, the fault spreading method, this paper puts forward a method based on graph theory and the fault block the diffusion evaluation algorithm, proves the accuracy and practicality of the algorithm. The algorithm has the features of simple, clear, fast,being able to calculate the reliability index of complex medium voltage distribution network.Finally, aiming at the existing problems of Xinyu urban distribution network,the improvement measures is put forward, so as to provide reference for improving the reliability of power supply in Xinyu city.
