As a kind of clean energy, hydropower is not only environmentally friendly, but also renewable, its development and utilization is of great significance. Hydropower development is indispensable to the construction of dams, and the arch dam is one of the important type of dam. It is renowned for its reasonable structure and beautiful shape. In recent years, arch dam is valued by many scholars for its designers and its application is more and more widely.The shape of arch dam is related to the dam safety, cost and construction etc., which has important effect. It has a real engineering significance to optimization design for arch dam and to find the most economic and reasonable shape in the given topography, geology and load condition. China is an earthquake prone area, and it considered the earthquake may destruct the dam, the dam should be carried out the seismic checking.In this paper, the parabolic double-curvature arch dam has carried on the static analysis, obtained the distribution of stress and displacement under static load, which is based on the finite element method and ANSYS software. And then, the author took the dam’s volume and the dam’s stress as single-objective and used the zero-order and first-order optimization method of ANSYS respectively to realize the shape optimization of arch dam. This paper by means of parametric design language APDL, compiling ANSYS command stream file, realized the automatic reading in parameters, automatic modeling and automatic optimization analysis and so on. It greatly reduces the repeated time consumed in the previous design process and the operation process is more simple and quick.Finally, considering the possible damage caused by the earthquake on the dam, seismic checking calculation of arch dam should be taken after optimization. ANSYS structural analysis software, which is also compiled corresponding commands stream by APDL, is used to calculate the vibration characteristics of the structure and dynamic response under horizontal seismic action to realize the seismic performance analysis of arch dam.Through engineering example, this paper proves the feasibility and rationality that the ANSYS build-in zero-order and first-order method can be applied to shape optimization design of arch dam. At the same time, seismic performance of arch dam is achieved by ANSYS finite element analysis. The fact proves, the program has strong reliability, high efficiency, stable convergence, and also has simple process, high intelligent degree.
