As one of engineering material, silt is often used in practical engineering, and its characteristics in-situ need to be understood. Silt is different from sand and clay for its own characteristics. The relevant study of silt is obviously less than that of sand and clay. In view of practical engineering requirement, the paper studies on engineering characteristics of silt and its test methods of filling quality. The main contents are as follows:(1) By studying of the physical and mechanical test of silt in the dam of Zheng Xu Reservoir in Cixi City and Shiji Xinqiu seawall in Shangyu City, major conclusions are as follows:Firstly, silt of the above engineering belong to compression soil and their permeability and strength characteristics are associated with the sand content; Secondly, it is more reasonable to obtain the controlling dry density of silt filling through conversion of compaction degree.(2) By studying of the test of dynamic characteristics of silt in the dam of Zheng Xu Reservoir in Cixi City, the deformation, strength, dynamic response of silt and buildup of pore water pressure were analyzed.(3) By studying of test in the construction site and sample testing, the following acknowledges are obtained:Firstly, the quality of hydraulic filling silt and mechanical vibration effect are better than that of artificial vibration, as the influence depth of mechanical vibration can even reach0.9m; Secondly, compared with the static compaction, the level of groundwater in mechanical vibration compacted area decreased rapidly, pressure of pore water dissipates quickly, and fluctuation variation is basically the same and have positively correlation.(4) Finally, the results of silt test show that the method of transient Rayleigh wave is feasible for dry density test of silt filling of the dam of Zheng Xu Reservoir. Also, it has a broad prospect of application.
