With the rapid socio-economic development and globalization, people have an increasingly intensified demand for spiritual civilization. Besides, the communication and integration of cultures from various countries becomes more and more frequent. As a result, the culture feature of each country and each region is fading with each passing day and the convergence phenomenon is increasingly evident. Consequently, contemporary interior design tends to ignore local cultural characteristics and lack spiritual considerations during its course of development... And it is an urgent problem for people to solve when pursuing spiritual civilization to figure out how to create an interior environment with the sense of times, rich cultural foundation and local characteristics. The author firstly proceeds from the traditional cultural theories of Hainan Tanka. Tanka people are an ancient ethnicity that is distributed in the southeast coastal regions. They have been living in rivers and lakes from generations to generations, thus forming a special overwater society, commonly known as "Boat Dwellers". Tanka people mainly lives in Hainan Island and they live together mainly in every coastal port. The particular living environment creates the unique spiritual and material civilization and forms a unique culture different from that of inland residents. The author has consulted for a great many of literatures and research findings and then summarized them from three aspects:the history and culture, ethnical customs and the current lifestyles of Henan Tanka. Then, the author analyzes the development of China’s interior design over the last thirty years, development tread and the existing problems in contemporary interior design in China. On this basis, the author analyzes basic principles, elements and techniques of applying traditional Hainan Tanka culture into contemporary interior design. Finally, with an actual case study on the bar "Sea Story", the thesis illustrates the specific techniques of expressions of traditional Hainan Tanka culture in contemporary interior space, which is helpful to explore the design concept and method of the interior space from the perspective of traditional Hainan Tanka culture. The thesis proposes to integrate the traditional Hainan Tanka culture into contemporary interior design. This not only satisfies people’s physical and psychological needs but also further people’s understanding of and pursuit for traditional Hainan Tanka culture. The thesis aims to illustrate contemporary interior space with the spirits and cultural connotation of traditional Hainan Tanka culture to probe into the significance of integrating such a culture into contemporary interior design.
