Intersection is a feature of urban road traffic pattern in our country, in the limited space, vehicles from different directions keep gathering, shunting, etc., which complicate the intersection organization and lead to low through efficiency of vehicles, especially the left turning traffic flow. It does not only increase the delay, but also be the main factor that leads to conflict. How to using the intersection space of the internal resources fully without any increase in construction costs and land and make more efficient channelized traffic organization and signal timing optimization control in order to reduce conflicts and improve the efficiency of traffic efficiency. This is one of the effective measures to ease traffic pressure to some extent. This article investigates this problem and put forward the concrete design and implementation methods.This paper mainly investigates from the design idea of waiting area layout and the signal timing strategy respectively. This paper first discusses the topic background and research significance, and summarized capacity calculation methods of approaches in intersection with waiting area at home and abroad; based on the analysis of characteristics of road traffic and movement track, investigate the detail of setting waiting area from the geometry size, the signal timing and traffic flow a; then introduces and analyzes the basic procedure of setting waiting area for existing and new intersection, in view of the different types of intersections, investigate the methods for setting waiting area from two aspects of traffic organization method and geometric design; Select the scientific and reasonable key indicators for evaluating quality of intersection operation, this article selects capacity, delay and fuel consumption as indexes, set up a corresponding mathematical model respectively and evaluate traffic benefits before and after setting waiting area by adopting the combination of qualitative, quantitative methods and simulation, and make a comparison of model calculation data and simulating data. Lastly, the two typical intersection of Yizhuang in Beijing is analyzed, according to the field data, make the feasibility analysis and determine the design scheme, and simulate and analyzes based on VISSIM simulation platform.Researches have shown that, when the saturated level of intersection is low, setting waiting area result in reducing capacity and increasing delay; when intersection saturation level increases, waiting area can enhance the utilization of the internal space of the intersection, and with the length of waiting area increasing, the rate of intersection traffic capacity grows and delay decreases. But not all intersections are suitable for setting waiting area, and waiting area can increase the average number of stops at the same time, which leads to increase fuel consumption and pollutant emissions further.
