This article explores the possibility to construct system of open urban spaces through rainwater management, and find out the method of water capacity calculation for open space system integrated with rainwater management. It takes an advantage of the existing urban open spaces, and makes them the multi-functional places for absorbing rainwater during the rainy day. Based on the spatial accessibility theory, we put forward the analysis of water capacity calculation for new, and evaluate its capacity by network analysis in GIS. At last, quantitative constraints for landscape design are acquired, rendering the storage capacity of functional open space. According to these analyses, applied to a substantial urbanized region in Nanjing, it discusses the feasibility of the approach presented in this study and their eventual application to similar landscape and urban planning scenarios. The full text is divided into five sections:Firstly, open space system theory get involved in this part. Open space system and multi-functional rainwater storage are interpreted to establish the new system for rainwater management. Spatial accessibility analysis is employed in evaluating the ability of the new system to absorbing rainwater. They are the theoretical foundation of the whole paper. After constructing the new system of urban open spaces through rainwater management, the method to study this system should be quested. The principle and method of spatial accessibility analysis can be used in making sure whether the rainwater can reach the open spaces or not, and measuring how much rainwater open spaces be able to contain. Geographical and hydrologic information, as well as urban open space information, should be collected. The network analysis in GIS, including descriptive analysis, statistical analysis and the road network-based distance measurement, is mainly applied to evaluate the service area of new system. Spatial configuration analysis for rainwater management can compute the capacity for each functional open space.Thirdly, taking the old district of Nanjing as an example, we construct the new system at the first phase. Then we calculate its service area and volume, which can provide some advices for landscape and urban design, by means of the process described above. Finally, it comes to the conclusions and outlook. The thesis sums up the main conclusions and the inadequacy of the existing and future needs to be further explored.
