Research On The Language Of Defected Space

Nowadays in the field of architecture, diversified design minds exist along withvarious constructing manifestations. Buildings with strong privilege are visuallysuperior to their surroundings, which brings architectural designers into troublesbecause they are considered to “bullying the weak”. Negative space, namely, theweak, was being studied in this paper instead of strong, high-key objects in urbanareas. Based on the study of design ideas and methods of this kind of buildings,more urban-developing strategies can be possibly found.First, this paper is based on modern political and economic situations. Threefeatures of buildings were being discussed, that is large volume, resourceconsumption and irreversibility. In the light of internal integrity of Daoismphilosophy, visually dominated architectural industry was criticized because ofneglecting environment, culture and function. Nature-oriented,tradition-returned-to,site-rooted and site-connected design was then prompted.Secondly, traditional and modern space concept of China and western countieswere sorted out. The perspective of study of negative points was then extended tosuitability, naturalness, contradictoriness, and potentiality to discuss the deeprelations between architectural space and the environment. It was advocated that,the existence of buildings, which worked as the communication media betweenhuman and nature, was not supposed to separate itself from the environment, but toweaken and eliminate its external elements and to humbly subject to theenvironment. In line with local conditions, limiting factors could be utilized.Various factors of the environment could be explored in order to reach the situation,“taken from nature, boosted in nature”. According to worldwide research resultsregarding negative space and the method of combining theory and practice, theexternal vanity of design was reflected regarding to respecting sites and combiningnature.Lastly, besides criticism, buildings was expected to deal with acute diseases ofthe society. The ancients attached their emotions to the nature. More attentionsnowadays should be placed on the emotion-attached nature and related spaceconcept. By means of studying on negative space language, some new ideas andrational thoughts were generated with respect to blind worship and addiction ofmodern design to visual appearance.
