With the rapid development of infrastructure construction in China since1980s, moreand more curved continuous box girder bridges have been built. However, in recent years, theproblems of the lateral displacement are increasingly serious. Therefore, researching themechanism and measures of the lateral displacement are significant both theoretically andpractically. Based on an engineering project in Shenzhen, this paper explores the causes ofthe lateral displacement and its treatment,At first, the researcher introduces the mechanical characters and the common problemsof the curved continuous box girder bridge, together with some relevant theories ofcomputation.Secondly, Midas Civil finite element modals are build up to analyze the causes of thelateral displacement, including dead load, shrinkage and creep of concrete, temperature load, vehicle load, pre-stressed load and the temperature load as a result of the expansion jointsfailure. As regards to the effects caused by vertical temperature gradients at cross section ofconcrete bridges, this study compares this point in the Bridge Design Criteria of China andthat in other countries. After then, the writer analyzes how the various factors affect thelateral displacement of curved bridge. The results show that the vertical temperature gradients in the Bridge Design Criteria ofChina are appropriate. Various factors, as well as time, cause the lateral displacement ratherthan a single one. As to the continuous girder bridge discussed in this study, vehicle load andtemperature load caused by the expansion joints failure are the major factors which result inthe lateral displacement after a period of its operation.Owing to the impact of temperature load caused by the expansion joints failure, it isimportant to maintain the expansion joints on the curved continuous box girder bridge. Finally, the treatment methods are discussed. The paper proposes the correspondenttreatment methods for this engineering project in Shenzhen, which serves as a good referencefor similar engineering projects.
