It is well known that rail transport now is the most efficient way in landtransportation, which plays an important position in transportation field. In recentyears, as the railway techniques improving, the transmission way of electriclocomotives changes from DC transmission into AC transmission.This study researches the brush’s abnormal wearing failure of ZD114A DCtraction motor in SS4B electric locomotive. This kind of locomotive mainlyundertakes the coal export transportation from Strom South to Huanghua Port. Since2003, when the locomotive is running to about100,000miles, the traction motor’sbrush shows abnormal wearing, which seriously affects the locomotive’s normaloperation.Firstly, this study analyzes the domestic electric locomotive’s current situationand its improvement, elaborates the great practical significance of researching theDC traction motor’s operation and question.Secondly, it introduces the principles and characteristics of ZD114A tractionmotor. By detecting the faulty motor, it finds the steering is deformed largely; bycalculating and comparative analyzing the design, process, material, brush selectionand commutating compensation of the motor, it finds that the original commutatorhas several designing defects, such as excessive Dove tail stress, unmatched boltaxial compliance, and faulty brush selection, and then takes verification testing.Thirdly, for those failure causes, it takes a number of improvement measures,mainly improving the commutator’s structure to raise the standard of domesticmaterials, improving the commutator’s manufacturing process to adjust the motorinterpole magnetic field, and reselecting the brush to improve the brush pressure. Bytaking all kinds of verify tests to the improved motor, it shows that the improvedone’s mechanical stability is much better than the original one. In that way, theproblem of deformation of the commutator is completely solved. The improvedmotor lowers the spark to qualified range and passes the no-spark-on-trail test.Finally, it provides new motor to customers for test running, when the motor isrunning to200,000miles, while it does not find similar failure after testing theoperation of the motor. The surface of commutator and brush is well to meet theoperational requirements and win the customer’s praise. Thus, this study and its improvement achieve expected results.
