Product Design Research Based On The Theory Of Emotionally Durable Design

As the society is developing increasingly fast today, the question of how sustainable development in designing would be best achieved has been widely thought by a lot of designers. The emerging of emotionally durable design has opened up a new way of thinking for traditional sustainable development in designing. It is capable of extending the period of interaction between users and products by starting the design from the perceptual point of view. Utilizing the method of empathic designing, designers analyze the users’ real needs by observing, understanding, recording, and investigating their behaviors, achieving emotionally durable designing that is compatible with today’s high-tech background.As people’s living standards have been continuously improving, users’emotional needs from the products have also increased. The functionality and technology based products designed by the traditional designing methodology is no longer able to well satisfy users’ psychological needs. This paper, based on the focus of traditional designing methodology on products’ rational features, further analyzed and explored the perceptual characteristics of products, lied foundation and created possibilities for fully meeting users’ emotional needs.Setting its foundation on today’s social environment and background, this paper introduced the basic ideas of emotionally durable design and its user-product relation model, then systematically elaborated its seven distinguishable features. At the same time, it explained the relation between emotionally durable design and empathic design. In the end, with the design case of a smart sphygmomanometer, the importance of emotionally durable design in product designing is demonstrated.
