Compared with fixed-wing aircraft, helicopter does not require a dedicated track and it can carry out various missions such as lifting, transportation, rescue or attack in places lack of prepared conditions or in deserts. Just for this reason, it makes the helicopter work in the environment full of dust and dirt, so the life of the engine will be influenced greatly if the helicopter works in these poor conditions usually. Therefore, the helicopter engine needs the protection of inlet protection device.In this paper, a lot of domestic and foreign literatures are quoted. It starts with the summarizing of the environment that the helicopter works in and the harms on engine took by dust and dirt. Then it introduces the properties and application situation of several inlet protection devices. At last it does numerical simulate and calculation analysis of two different types engine inlet particle separator (IPS) based on the equation of Air-solid Two Phase.In order to introduce the harms on engine took by dust and dirt it needs to start with an overview of the helicopter engine inlet protection and associated basic concepts of inlet protection. Then it expounds the necessity of the protection of engine inlet on some sides such as the dusty environment that the helicopter works in and the harms on engine parts took by dust and dirt.In the part that describes block-type air intake filter, single-channel particle separator and multi-channel particle separator it focus on introducing the working principle and their usage in helicopters. Then it expounds the advantages and disadvantages and the research methods of all kinds of inlet protection devices.As for the basic equation of Air-solid Two Phase, it mainly summarizes the characteristics of the flowing of air and solid phase in engine particle separator, especially focus on introducing the basic equation of the flowing of rare phase in inlet protection including basic equations, the particle movement trajectory equation, the collision of particles and solid wall formula, and the forces of fluid on other variety solid particles. Then it describes the numerical model of the flowing of air and solid phase.In the part of numerical analysis of particle separator flow field and particle tracks, it calculates the value of it including numerical geometry model, computational model, mesh and boundary conditions. Then it compares the numerical simulation of two difference types of Inlet particle separator (IPS01and IPS02).The study shows that, the damage to the engine of large size sand (Dp>200um) is much larger than the one of small size sand (Dp<30μm) and the efficiency of two inlet particle separator almost have no difference as for the small size sand, In addition the total pressure loss of IPS02is smaller than IPS01. So IPS02is suggested to be used in practical application.
