As one of the key components, the dynamic characteristics of rotor-support system determine the performance of rotary machines. During the research of the rotor system of rotor-support system, model test is an indispensable part besides the mathematics and simulation, which can reflect the dynamic characteristics of the prototype to some extent without high costs and difficulties. In order to make the model performs like the prototype does, research about the design method of rotor-support system’s similar dynamic model is done. The similarity relationship is firstly derived from dynamic equations of rotor system and the accuracy is validated on the natural frequency, modal shape and critical speed of rotor-support system with FEM. In some cases, the support stiffness can’t match the similarity relationship, according to this, a method to determine the interval of the model support stiffness is created, and the method is validated to be correct. Research is done to validate that the relationship and the support stiffness interval design method could be used on the energy distribution of the rotor-support system. During the research, it is found that the strain energy and the total energy of rotor-support system are more sensitive to the support stiffness. According to the prototype rotor-support system, a test rig of model rotor-support system is designed and built up with the similar relationship and the support stiffness interval design method. Their natural frequencies, modal shapes and critical speeds are tested, and then the comparison analysis is made between the test results of the prototype and model. The analysis proves the accuracy of the similarity relationships and the support stiffness interval design method.
