With the increasing of the density of modern building, the working space of tower crane is limited by the small space, it improves the requirements of the tower crane. The cylinder luffing jib tower crane uses a hydraulic cylinder for the luffing, the jib can be raised to a nearly vertical extent, and this feature is ideal for crane to work in the congested urban construction site. This paper is about the study on the design of the movable-counterweight, the layout of the three hinge pin and the calculation of the lifting performance, the calculation model was built, the respective calculation methods were given, and the structural was analyzed by ANSYS, providing a reference for the design of such a tower crane. The following aspects of the work have been done in this paper:(1) Studying on the design of the movable-counterweight of cylinder luffing jib tower crane, the implementation of the movable-counterweight of cylinder luffing jib tower crane was elaborated, and a mechanical model was built, the calculation method of movable-counterweight was given for the study on other aspects below.(2) Studying on the design of the luffing system of cylinder luffing jib tower crane, from the actual stress on the luffing cylinder to find the coordinates of the hinge pin through MATLAB programming.(3) Studying on the stability of the overturn of the tower and the mechanical properties of the jib were treated as the influence factors, in order to determine the calculation method of the lifting performance of the cylinder luffing jib tower crane.(4) Conducting the whole static and buckling analysis of cylinder luffing jib tower crane, the finite element model of cylinder luffing jib tower crane was built by ANSYS, the static and modal analysis of typical conditions was done to meet the requirement of strength, stiffness and buckling stability the tower crane.(5) Conducting the whole modal analysis of cylinder luffing jib tower crane. Tower cranes are low-frequency vibration systems, analyzing the modal of tower crane in two special states, namely the elevation of jib levels and maximum, the natural frequencies of the first six states and modes have been given.
