Urban construction lands were nearly occupied by urban non-public plots. Non-public blocks’ boundary space can not only divide the ownership of city plots, but also protect the land space and participate in shaping the image of urban space. Among with30years of reform and opening up, urban non-public plots’ boundaries were greatly changed from closed to open, from simple to complex, from single to multiple. There are two purposes of this thesis. First, it aims to investigate the function, the characteristics and the history of the Boundary of Non-public plots in cities. Secondly, the study summarizes design principles and methods for the Boundary of Non-public plots in cities. This study has the double meaning of the theory and the practice. Not only enriching the theory of the Boundary, not also with some guidance and reference for design of the Boundary of Non-public plots in cities. This dissertation was composed of six chapters, the basic content summarized as follows:The first chapter explained the reasons of topic selection, the purpose and the significance of the study. After that the study gave an interpretation of the important concepts. After that, the first chapter sorted out the domestic research and the studies in other counties. At the end of the first chapter, the study introduced several major research methods. The second chapter focuses on the functions, types, characteristics, and the historical development of non-public plot boundary. The third chapter analyzed the forms of urban non-public plots. There are three main forms, such as rigid elements, soft elements and combinations of the various elements. This chapter also discussed the various elements of the basic settings. The fourth chapter discussed the main principles we must followed. The main principles are as follows, applicability of the principle, the principle of economy, aesthetics principles, holistic principles and principles of sustainable development. The fifth chapter proposed urban non-public boundaries in different situations with different boundary setting methods. The sixth chapter concluded conclusions of the study, pointed out the contribution and the shortcomings of research. At last, the study gave the prospects of the future research.
