From the beginning of the mid-1990s, there is a heat wave of university campusconstruction in China. The evolving education philosophy and the changing paradigm ofcampus planning have brought forth a profound impact on the environment and landscapeconstruction. In the meantime, it has also highlighted quite some problems in campusconstruction. Many teachers and students in the newly constructed campus lack the sense ofidentification and belonging. Comparing the newly constructed campuses to the old ones,many new campuses lack proper cultural landscape atmosphere and falls short of the taste ofspace culture.As a materialized vehicle of campus culture, these landscapes not only display universityimages, foster positive culture and promote the sense of identification, but also have aninvisible yet significant meaning educating teachers and students on campus. The research oncultural landscape, and in particular, research on campus cultural landscape, can helpuniversities in China inherit and pass on their respective history, develop new culturalcharacteristics in a new era, and meet the various behavioral and spiritual needs of teachersand students on campus.This article explores the concepts associated with cultural landscape design, and makesclear the significance of campus cultural landscape, reviews and summarizes the lessons learntfrom the cultural landscape construction of the old and new Chinese domestic campuses. Thisresearch adopts a combination of data collection and field visit to conduct a detailed survey onthe characteristics and the meaning of campus cultural landscape in Nanjing. A summary ofmany inadequacies and areas for further improvement is also presented in this article. Theauthor puts forward some thoughts on four areas, namely, system development of campuscultural landscape, meaning of constructions, model of construction, as well as nodes ofconstruction. Combined with the practice of Cultural Landscape Improvement of NanjingUniversity of Technology, the author expects to apply theories into application, in the hope ofproviding reference for future construction of campus cultural landscape.
