| In recent years, in the context of "Tradition versus Modernity", a lot of nativearchitectural practices with significance of criticism and innovative value spring up in China.Through these creative architectural practices, Chinese young architects show their basicunderstandings of Chinese traditional culture from different perspectives. Surprisingly,majority of Chinese young architects, simultaneously attempt to make the courtyard space asa bridge linking tradition to modernity. As the typical space type of Chinese traditionalarchitecture, courtyard space is always applied and developed in Chinese young architects’exploratory practices.Focusing on courtyard space, the paper interprets the clues of historical development ofthe Chinese traditional courtyard space and reveals the cultural connotation in thedevelopment process. From the perspective of spatial form, the paper analyzes the essentialcharacteristics and design ideas of traditional courtyard space both in unit composing andgroup organization. Next, by making a historical comparison between traditional courtyardspace and contemporary ones, the paper analyzes the design methods of courtyard unitcomposing and courtyard group organization in Chinese young architects’ practices.Meanwhile, the inheritance of courtyard space, as well as the variation is revealed. The corechapter of the paper, which selects three young architects’ representative projects as typicalcases, analyzes their distinct strategies of courtyard space design on the base of diagram-analysis method. In the end, the paper makes the conclusion and expects possible diversedesign tendencies when Chinese architects are confronted with traditional architecturalculture in the future.The paper is composed of five chapters with about78400Chinese characters and143illustrations (including132figures and11tables):Chapter1gives a brief introduction on the background of the topic and the significanceof the study. This chapter also analyzes relevant researches in this field and puts forwardauthor’s research framework.Chapter2illuminates the clues of origin and development of the Chinese traditionalcourtyard space in history, and reveals the cultural connotation in the development process.In addition, this chapter analyzes the essential characteristics of traditional courtyard unit anddesign ideas of group organization.Chapter3focuses on the inheritance and variation of courtyard space in contemporary development. From the perspective of courtyard space in Chinese young architects’ practices,this chapter analyzes form operation and spatial order of both courtyard unit and courtyardgroup. Besides, this chapter interprets space narrative and space intention, advancing theresearch step by step.Chapter4emphasizes on the case studies of Chinese young architects’ courtyardpractices in Yangtze delta region. Three representative projects, in this chapter, are selectedto analyze three architects’ distinct design methods and design strategies of courtyard spaceoperation by a lot of diagrams. Furthermore, taking account of their education backgroundand practice background, this chapter reveals three architects’ diverse design tendencies whenthey cope with tradition.Chapter5is the conclusion, which summarizes the paper, proposes innovations andpresents follow-up study. |
