Research On The Composition And Expression Of Modern Timber Architectural Form

Modern timber architecture has been widely used in the world due to the popularity ofecological concept and the promotion of timber construction technology in recent years.Though the modern timber technology has been introduced in China in1980s, the type ofmodern timber practice is still single and the domestic researches on modern timber are mainlyfocused on the technique. So it s necessary to do some research on timber form to enhance theunderstanding of modern timber building and promote the diversification of modern timberpractices.Based on the form composition and form expression, the researches on the compositionmode and performance characteristics of modern timber architecture under the new era andtechnology are done by case analysis and summary. The form characteristics of modern timberarchitecture are shown from multi-angle. This paper aims to deepen the understanding ofmodern timber architecture and provide a meaningful reference for design practice.This paper is divided into six chapters with about71,200Chinese characters and163illustrations（161figures and2tables）:Chapter1: Introduction. Starting with the research background and significance, thischapter discusses the content and method of research and summarized the study status at homeand abroad. Then the research ideas are clarified, the main concepts are defined and theresearch framework of the paper is given.Chapter2: The research basis of modern timber form composition. It is the basis ofchapter3and is studied from both technical and theoretical basis. The technical basis includesmaterial, node, processing and structure techniques. The theoretical basis, based on the theoryof form composition, elicits the basic elements used in this paper such as stick, slab and block.Chapter3: Modern timber form composition. The mode of form composition is discussedfrom shape composition and space boundaries composition in this chapter. The form creationsare studied from structural composition and evolution, and the space boundaries compositionis studied from exposed interface of structure and wooden skin.Chapter4: The material expression of modern timber form. The expression principle ofwood is analyzed from human s feelings and perceptions. Then some studies are done on the features of wood single material expression and the multi-material expression.Chapter5: The comprehensive expression of modern timber form. This chaptersummarizes the comprehensive expression of modern timber architecture from three aspects:functional scale, ecological technology and regional culture. And two cases are analyzed atlast.Chapter6: Conclusion and outlook. A comprehensive conclusion and future prospects aregiven in this chapter, and some innovative points and the insufficiency in this paper arepointed out.
