Islamic architecture was founded by Mohammed who used it to spread doctrine and deal with religious affairs. Early Islamic buildings were designed very simply, but as the scale were getting larger, their style and form diversified with the development of religion and the evolution of the times along with the needs of the majority of Muslim worship. However, the buildings are always required to follow the basic Muslim religious philosophy strictly, they contain profound conception of Muslim history and philosophy of religion as a religious art.The basic types of Islamic architecture in India are mosques, Mausoleum, castles and palaces.This paper was done on the basic theory of architecture and other related subjects such as sociology and anthropology, combined with the books, documents, photographs, field research and other relevant information. From the perspective of historical development, research and analysis during the historical period from the early times to the Mughal, as well as the shift from style imitation in the beginning to the later development of unique Indian form. Moreover, the paper described more types of Indian Islamic architecture by more examples.This paper is divided into seven chapters, the first chapter is the introduction, to put forward the overall vision, including the sources of the subject, the subject content, purpose and significance of study along with the current status and methods of this project. The second chapter introduces the formation and development of Islam in India, including the incoming, the rise and development of Indian Islam, telling the basic Islamic beliefs and ideology and theory. The third chapter is an overview of the early development of Islamic architecture in India, including the region of Islamic architecture, the development process, describing the development process during each early dynasty. The fourth chapter shows the most classic era in Islamic architectural history, the Mughal Islamic architecture, and the shift from style imitation in the beginning to the later development of unique Indian form, mainly divided into five sections for the overview of each. The fifth Chapter is the analysis about the different types and typical examples of Islamic architecture in India, with the classic cases to tell the story. Chapter Six is about the artistic characteristics of Islamic architecture in India, introducing from decorative patterns, decorative materials and techniques to show the unique art of Islamic architecture. Chapter Seven displays the influence of Islamic architecture on modern Indian architecture, including the various design styles mixed by local culture and Mughal architectural style and designed by the architects during the British colonial India.
