With the increasing of intelligent and digitization in smart grid devices, its safe and reliable operation becomes urgent. Relay protection as a key technology to guarantee security and stability of the smart grid, has been intensive researched by many experts and scholars. Based on the communication infrastructure of IEC 61850 to realize digital protection will result in simply wiring and efficiently system, which is the foundation to guarantee the precondition of smart grid.and the capability of relay wide-area protection, The studies have laid the foundation on the studies of digital relay protection, with which a relatively complete information model has been established based on the IEC 61850 Ed1.0. Whereas these researches are limited to the defect of IEC 61850, without taking the engineering configuration between substation into account. The realization of engineering configuration between substations is possible.In order to explore a whole wide-area protection communication and engineering configuration based on IEC 61850 Ed2.0,this article do the research as following:(1) In the basis of in-depth study of the relay protection algorithm and wide-area protection, proposed a novel digital wide-area protection IEC 61850 standard communication.(2) In this paper, in order to explore a whole digitization process that includes functional decomposition, information modeling and engineering configuration,taking digital current differential protection and distance protection as an example.This article constructs a comprehensive digital current differential protection information interaction model(3) The MSVCB,GoCB based on IEC 61850 Ed2.0.Then emphasize on a new engineering configuration process and SED file describes, SED file act as a tool to transform rights of IED. Ultimately, the dataflow between the substations which have designed in the information interaction model can be added through this engineering configuration process.(4) There is no systematic experimental system of digital substation, the paper in the digital wide-area protection on the basis of theoretical research, the wide-area communication network of digital protection, engineering, configuration and communication experiments GOOSE messages form a more complete communication experimental system to verify the feasibility of digital wide-area protection.
