China is one of the countries which suffer from seismic activity most seriously. The serious seismic activity brought about large casualties and property loss. The horizontal construction joints which are located in the top or bottom of the pillar are inevitable. But the studies on seismic behavior of building structure with construction joints are few. So Through the shaking table test and FEM analysis, we studied the earthquake resistant behavior about the frame structures with construction joints.By using similarity theory used in shaking table test, we recorded the design and model-making process for frame structures with horizontal construction joints in the top of pillars and frame structures without construction joints. By the results of the test we analyzed the dynamic property, acceleration response and displacement response. By the FEM analysis using software of ABAQUS we studied the elastic-plastic time-history analysis about the frame structures and added a contrastive model whose construction joints are located in the middle of pillars.On the basis of the research results we draw conclusions that the width of cracks of frame structures with construction joints are bigger than frame structures without construction joints and the numbers of cracks are more than frame structures without construction joints when the strength of geological process is large; the natural frequency and mode of vibrations of frame structures with construction joints and frame structures without construction joints are similar, the changing rules of acceleration time history are similar too; the relative storey displacements of frame structures with construction joints and frame structures without construction joints are similar when the strength of geological process is small. The difference of relative storey displacements on the top floor between frame structures with construction joints in the top of pillars and frame structures without construction joints is big when the strength of geological process is large. Therefore, construction joints have little effect on the acceleration response, displacement response and modality of frame structures with construction joints and frame structures without construction joints when the strength of geological process is small. In addition, construction joints have major effect on the emergence and development of cracks. On this basis we put forward proposals that influences from construction joints can be ignored when we calculate internal force and deformation of structures suffering from frequent earthquake, but influences from construction joints must be considered when we calculate crack-controlling and deformation of structures suffering from rare occurrence earthquake. Thus we can take some measures: we can insert coarse and short rebars near the construction joints or use prestressed concrete structure; we can multiply by an appropriate magnification when we calculate elasticoplastic relative storey displacement of frame structure with construction joints.
